How SUDUTT Lab moved NABL calibration from Excel to one portal that calculates uncertainty in one click and works offline
An NABL-accredited electrical calibration lab ran every job on Excel sheets. We built a portal that takes a job from customer request to signed certificate: engineers enter raw readings, the system calculates measurement uncertainty, and the certificate, QR sticker and verification page are generated. A desktop app lets engineers keep working without internet and syncs everything when they are back online.
The Challenge
SUDUTT calibrates high-voltage and low-voltage electrical instruments under NABL accreditation. Every job ran on Excel: one workbook per instrument type, with complex uncertainty formulas copied from sheet to sheet.
- 14 different raw data formats (tan delta, partial discharge, impulse, HV dividers, multimeters, winding resistance, turns ratio, insulation testers, power analysers), each with its own maths
- Uncertainty budgets (Type A, Type B, k-factor, CMC) had to match NABL rules exactly - one wrong cell meant a wrong certificate
- Engineers often work at customer sites and in plants abroad where internet is poor or missing
- Certificate numbers, ULR numbers and stickers had to stay unique and in sequence across every PC
- Printing stickers one by one for 75 instruments per company took hours
Our Solution
We built the SUDUTT Lab Portal, a Laravel web application with a matching offline desktop app.
- Raw data entry screens for all 14 formats. Engineers type the readings and press Calculate: averages, errors, Type A / Type B uncertainty, k-factor and expanded uncertainty are worked out from the master equipment data
- The calculation engine was rebuilt from the lab's own workbooks and checked value by value; where the workbooks had formula mistakes we flagged them instead of copying them
- Calibration certificates generated straight from the raw data, on the correct NABL / FDAS letterhead, with a QR code that opens a public verification page
- An offline-first desktop app (Electron + SQLite) carries the same portal. Engineers work with no internet; every change is queued and synced both ways when the PC is online again. Numbers made offline are temporary and replaced by the real sequence on sync, so nothing is ever duplicated
- Auto-update: a new desktop version is uploaded once from the admin panel and every registered PC updates itself
- QR stickers for every instrument, printed singly on the label printer or all at once on A4 with copies per certificate
The Results
- Certificates now come straight from the raw data - no retyping and no copied formulas
- Uncertainty for a full set of readings is calculated in one click, the same way on every PC
- Engineers keep working on site without internet; their data reaches the office on the next sync
- Every certificate and sticker carries a QR code that customers can scan to verify it
- A whole job's stickers print on A4 in one go instead of one by one
- New desktop versions reach every lab PC automatically
